Do you look back on Dawson's Creek now as an important stepping stone in your movie career - and would you ever consider other TV projects?
I think that Dawson's Creek was a huge opportunity and one that I look back on very fondly. In the future, I don't know. I'm excited at the prospect of doing more movies, I like playing a lot of different characters, but I'm open to all sorts of things. And I might do something on television, if the right thing came along.

Do you relate to that yourself having gone through Dawson's Creek's height of fame?
We had such a wonderful set of circumstances in Wilmington. Yes, the four of us became famous literally overnight, but we were in a small town and we always knew when people were coming down. We always knew when to behave. The rest of the time we had a lot of fun and, really, for six years we had a little bubble where we went to work everyday. We weren't being photographed or anything like that. We could get into fights act up and show up in a local coffee shop in nothing but our pjs.

Have you considered life after DC?
I must admit I'm a bit scared. First I'm going to have trouble leaving the character of Joey behind. I grew up with this character, I became an adult playing her. I feel like I'm going to lose a piece of myself. DC is so important in my life. I made my break thanks to this show. Then, of course, one of the toughest things will be to say goodbye to all these people I worked with. There's also the fear of being unemployed after having such a safe job working on this show. Although everythings' going fine right now, I know very well that it might stop anytime because that's how it works when you're an actress. Fortunately I've been saving money... (laughs)

DE: Is it tough to go from a comfortable ensemble that you've worked with for years on Dawson's Creek to a movie set where you don't know anyone?
KH: I think it's always kind of difficult. Dawson's Creek is so easy. I know everyone. On a movie, it's like starting a new school. You don't know where to sit at lunch. The bond that the four of us have on Dawson's Creek is so strong that when I go off to do other things, sometimes I call the other people and check in. I miss them.
DE: How much longer can Dawson's Creek go?
KH: Don't say it like that [laughs]. We have a six and half year contract, so this year will probably be it. I don't want there to be a wedding between any of the characters. I just want to create that feeling of bittersweetness as you're laughing. I hope that Dawson and Joey finally come together. The longing will be over.
DE: What, are you worried about with the show ending?
KH: Well, I get to do more stuff. But the negative things are that if a project doesn't go the right way and doesn't score huge at the box office, I don't have Dawson's Creek to fall back on. I'm used to being so busy. There's no net.

MLLE: What made the producers cast you in Dawson's Creek?
KH: (after pausing and stammering) I'm a lot like Joey and I think they saw that. I come from a small town. I was a tomboy. Joey tries to be articulate and deny that she doesn't have a lot of experience in life. Which is what I do. And Joey is learning, as I am. Her life parallels my life, which is all about new everything—new relationships, personas, perceptions---and about being guarded.
